[680] Which phenomena (dhammā) are inferior (hīnā)?
The three unwholesome roots (akusalamūla) — greed (lobha), hatred (dosa), delusion (moha) — and the defilements (kilesa) united with them; the aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha) associated therewith … the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha); the bodily action (kāyakamma), verbal action (vacīkamma), and mental action (manokamma) originating therefrom — these phenomena are inferior.
Which phenomena are middling (majjhimā)?
Wholesome and indeterminate phenomena (kusalābyākatā dhammā) subject to taints (sāsava), belonging to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the form sphere (rūpāvacara), and the formless sphere (arūpāvacara): the aggregate of form (rūpakkhandha) … the aggregate of consciousness — these phenomena are middling.
Which phenomena are superior (paṇītā)?
The unincluded (apariyāpanna) paths (magga), and the fruits of the paths (maggaphala), and the unconditioned element (asaṅkhatā dhātu) — these phenomena are superior.
