[782] Therein, which is clinging to views (diṭṭhupādāna)?
"There is nothing given, nothing offered, nothing sacrificed; there is no fruit or result of deeds well done and ill done; there is no this world, no other world; there is no mother, no father; there are no spontaneously reborn beings (opapātika); there are in the world no ascetics and brahmins, faring rightly and practicing rightly, who, having themselves realized this world and the other world by direct knowledge (abhiññā), make them known" — that which, of such a kind, is view (diṭṭhi), resort to views (diṭṭhigata), thicket of views (diṭṭhigahana), wilderness of views (diṭṭhikantāra), contortion of views (diṭṭhivisūkāyika), vacillation of views (diṭṭhivipphandita), the fetter of views (diṭṭhisaññojana), grasping (gāha), tenacious grip (paṭiggāha), adherence (abhinivesa), misapprehension (parāmāsa), the bad road (kummagga), the wrong path (micchāpatha), wrongness (micchatta), the ground of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana), the inverted grasp (vipariyesaggāha) — this is called clinging to views.
Excepting clinging to rules and observances (sīlabbatupādāna) and clinging to a doctrine of self (attavādupādāna), all wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi) whatsoever is clinging to views.
