[783] Therein, what is clinging to rules and observances (sīlabbatupādāna)?
[The view] of ascetics and brahmins outside of this [Dispensation] that "purity is through rules (sīla), purity is through observances (vata), purity is through rules and observances (sīlabbata)" — whatever view of such a kind as this: a view (diṭṭhi), a resort to views, a thicket of views, a wilderness of views, a contortion of views, a vacillation of views, a fetter of views (diṭṭhisaññojana), grasping, tenacious grasping, adherence, misapprehension, a bad road, a wrong path, wrongness, a ground of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana), an inverted grasp — this is called clinging to rules and observances.
