[819] Therein, what is adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa)?
"Through the rules (sīla) of ascetics and brahmins outside of this [dispensation] there is purity (suddhi); through [their] rituals (vata) there is purity; through [their] rules and rituals (sīlabbata) there is purity" — whatever view (diṭṭhi) of such a kind, resort to views (diṭṭhigata), … inverted grasp (vipariyesaggāha) — this is called adherence to rules and rituals.
