[725] Therein, which is the fetter of adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa-saññojana)?
"Purity is through the rules of conduct (sīla) of ascetics and brahmins outside this [dispensation], purity is through [their] observances (vata), purity is through [their] rules and observances (sīlabbata)" — whatever view (diṭṭhi) of such a kind [there is]: a resort to views (diṭṭhigata), a thicket of views (diṭṭhigahana), a wilderness of views (diṭṭhikantāra), a contortion of views (diṭṭhivisūkāyika), a vacillation of views (diṭṭhivipphandita), a fetter of views (diṭṭhisaññojana), grasping (gāha), holding fast (paṭiggāha), entrenchment (abhinivesa), misapprehension (parāmāsa), a bad path (kummagga), a wrong way (micchāpatha), wrongness (micchatta), a ground of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana), a perverted grasp (vipariyesaggāha) — any such [view]: this is called the fetter of adherence to rules and rituals.
