[813] Therein, what is adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa)? "Purity (suddhi) comes through the rules (sīla) of ascetics and brahmins outside of this [dispensation]; purity comes through [their] rituals (vata); purity comes through [their] rules and rituals (sīlabbata)" — whatever view (diṭṭhi) of such a kind, a resort to views (diṭṭhigata), … a distorted grasp (vipariyesaggāha): this is called adherence to rules and rituals.
