[673] Therein, what is adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa)?
Of ascetics and brahmins outside of this [dispensation], [the view] "purity is through rules (sīla), purity is through rituals (vata), purity is through rules and rituals (sīlabbata)" — whatever view of such a kind: resort to views (diṭṭhi), thicket of views, wilderness of views, contortion of views, vacillation of views, fetter of views, grasping, holding fast, insistence, misapprehension, bad road, wrong path, wrongness, ground of sectarian tenets, inverted grasping — this is called adherence to rules and rituals.
