[739] Therein, which is the bodily tie (kāyagantha) of adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa)?
"Purity (suddhi) is by the rules (sīla), purity is by the rituals (vata), purity is by the rules and rituals of ascetics and brahmins outside of this [teaching]" — whatever view of such a kind [there is]: the speculative view, the thicket of views, the wilderness of views, the contortion of views, the vacillation of views, the fetter of views (diṭṭhisaññojana); the grasping, the holding fast, the insistence, the misapprehension; the bad road, the wrong path, wrongness; the sectarian sphere (titthāyatana), the inverted grasp — this is called the bodily tie of adherence to rules and rituals.
