[82] Which on that occasion are the seven powers (bala)? The power of faith (saddhā-bala), the power of energy (vīriya-bala), the power of mindfulness (sati-bala), the power of concentration (samādhi-bala), the power of wisdom (paññā-bala), the power of moral shame (hirī-bala), the power of moral dread (ottappa-bala). Which on that occasion is the power of faith? That which on that occasion is faith, trusting, conviction, profound confidence, faith, the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), the power of faith — this on that occasion is the power of faith. Which on that occasion is the power of energy? That which on that occasion is the arousing of energy that is mental, exertion, endeavor, striving, effort, zeal, perseverance, vigor, steadfastness, unslackened endeavor, not casting aside desire, not casting aside the task, firm upholding of the task, energy, the faculty of energy, the power of energy, Right Effort — this on that occasion is the power of energy. Which on that occasion is the power of mindfulness? That which on that occasion is mindfulness (sati), recollection, recall, mindfulness, remembrance, retention, non-floating, non-forgetfulness, mindfulness, the faculty of mindfulness, the power of mindfulness, Right Mindfulness — this on that occasion is the power of mindfulness. Which on that occasion is the power of concentration? That which on that occasion is stability of mind (citta), steadfastness, steadiness, non-scattering, non-distraction, the state of unscattered mentality, calm, the faculty of concentration, the power of concentration, Right Concentration — this on that occasion is the power of concentration. Which on that occasion is the power of wisdom? That which on that occasion is wisdom, understanding, investigation, thorough investigation, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), discernment, close discernment, detailed discernment, erudition, proficiency, subtlety, discrimination, reflection, examination, breadth, sagacity, guidance, insight (vipassanā), clear comprehension (sampajañña), the goad, wisdom, the faculty of wisdom, the power of wisdom, the sword of wisdom, the palace of wisdom, the light of wisdom, the radiance of wisdom, the lamp of wisdom, the jewel of wisdom, non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, Right View — this on that occasion is the power of wisdom. Which on that occasion is the power of moral shame? That whereby on that occasion one is ashamed of what one ought to be ashamed of, is ashamed of engaging in evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) — this on that occasion is the power of moral shame. Which on that occasion is the power of moral dread? That whereby on that occasion one dreads what one ought to dread, dreads engaging in evil, unwholesome phenomena — this on that occasion is the power of moral dread. These on that occasion are the seven powers.
