Abhidhammapiṭaka · Dhammasaṅgaṇī · Vol. 34 · Section 863

[863] Therein, what is guarding of the doors of the faculties (indriyesu guttadvāratā)? Here someone, having seen a form with the eye, is not one who grasps at the sign (nimitta), not one who grasps at the features (anubyañjana); since, while he dwells with the eye faculty (cakkhundriya) unrestrained, evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) of covetousness and grief (abhijjhā-domanassa) might flow in upon him, he practices for its restraint (saṃvara), guards the eye faculty, and undertakes restraint with regard to the eye faculty. Having heard a sound with the ear … having smelled an odor with the nose … having tasted a flavor with the tongue … having touched a tangible object with the body … having cognized a mental phenomenon with the mind, he is not one who grasps at the sign, not one who grasps at the features; since, while he dwells with the mind faculty (manindriya) unrestrained, evil, unwholesome phenomena of covetousness and grief might flow in upon him, he practices for its restraint, guards the mind faculty, and undertakes restraint with regard to the mind faculty. That which is the guarding, the protecting, the watching over, and the restraint of these six faculties — this is called guarding of the doors of the faculties. Therein, what is moderation in eating (bhojane mattaññutā)? Here someone, reflecting wisely (paṭisaṅkhā yoniso), takes food neither for amusement, nor for intoxication, nor for adornment, nor for beautification, but only for the endurance and continuance of this body, for the ending of discomfort, for the assisting of the holy life (brahmacariya), considering: "Thus shall I terminate the old feeling (vedanā) and shall not arouse a new feeling; and there shall be for me keeping going, blamelessness, and a comfortable abiding." That which therein is contentment, moderation, and reflection with regard to food — this is called moderation in eating.
