[925] Which phenomena are ties (ganthā)?
The four ties: the bodily tie (kāyagantha) of covetousness (abhijjhā), the bodily tie of ill will (byāpāda), the bodily tie of adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa), the bodily tie of dogmatic insistence that "this is the truth" (idaṃsaccābhinivesa).
The bodily tie of covetousness arises in the eight arisings of consciousness (cittuppāda) accompanied by greed (lobha); the bodily tie of ill will arises in the two arisings of consciousness accompanied by grief (domanassa); the bodily tie of adherence to rules and rituals and the bodily tie of dogmatic insistence that "this is the truth" arise in the four arisings of consciousness associated with wrong views (diṭṭhigata-sampayutta). These phenomena are ties.
Which phenomena are not ties (no-ganthā)?
Excluding the ties, the remaining unwholesome (akusala); the wholesome (kusala) on the four planes (bhūmi); the resultant (vipāka) on the four planes; the functional indeterminate (kiriyā-abyākata) on the three planes; and form (rūpa) and Nibbāna — these phenomena are not ties.
