[1017] Therein, which are the eight faults of a person (purisadosa)?
Here bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense (āpatti). That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, extricates himself through lack of recollection: "I do not remember; I do not remember." This is the first fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, retorts against the accuser (codaka) himself: "What indeed is the use of anything said by you, a fool, an incompetent? Do you, of all people, think that you should speak to me?" This is the second fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, brings a counter-charge against the accuser himself: "You too have committed such-and-such an offense; you first make amends for it." This is the third fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, evades one question with another, diverts the talk to an outside matter, and displays anger, hatred, and displeasure. This is the fourth fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, speaks in the midst of the Saṅgha waving his arms about. This is the fifth fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, having fallen silent, vexes the Saṅgha. This is the sixth fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, disregarding the Saṅgha and disregarding the accuser, departs wherever he wishes while still guilty of the offense. This is the seventh fault of a person.
Furthermore, bhikkhus charge a bhikkhu with an offense. That bhikkhu, being charged with an offense by the bhikkhus, says thus: "Why indeed, venerable ones, are you so excessively busy about me? Now I shall renounce the training and return to the lower life." Having renounced the training and returned to the lower life, he says thus: "Now, venerable ones, be pleased!" This is the eighth fault of a person.
These are the eight faults of a person.
