[126] Therein, which is the ear element (sotadhātu)? That ear which is sensitivity (pasāda) derived from the four primary elements (mahābhūta) … this too is 'an empty village' — this is called the ear element.
Therein, which is the sound element (saddadhātu)? That sound which, derived from the four primary elements, is invisible and impinging … this too is the sound element — this is called the sound element.
Therein, which is the ear-consciousness element (sotaviññāṇadhātu)? Dependent on the ear and on sounds there arises mind (citta), mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), heart (hadaya), lucidity (paṇḍara), mentality (mano), the mind base (manāyatana), the mind faculty (manindriya), consciousness (viññāṇa), the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha), the corresponding ear-consciousness element — this is called the ear-consciousness element.
