Sixteen elements are subject to taints (sāsava); two elements are sometimes subject to taints, sometimes free from taints (anāsava). Sixteen elements are dissociated from taints (āsavavippayutta); two elements are sometimes associated with taints (āsavasampayutta), sometimes dissociated from taints. Sixteen elements are not to be described as "both taints and subject to taints"; they are subject to taints but not taints.
