Abhidhammapiṭaka · Vibhaṅga · Vol. 35 · Section 246

[246] […] [The twenty-two faculties (indriya)] are not taints (āsava). Ten faculties are subject to taints (sāsava); three faculties are free from taints (anāsava); nine faculties sometimes are subject to taints, sometimes are free from taints. Fifteen faculties are dissociated from taints (āsavavippayutta); the grief faculty (domanassindriya) is associated with taints (āsavasampayutta); six faculties sometimes are associated with taints, sometimes are dissociated from taints. Ten faculties cannot be said to be 'both taints and subject to taints'; they are subject to taints but not taints. Three faculties cannot be said to be either 'both taints and subject to taints' or 'subject to taints but not taints.' Nine faculties cannot be said to be 'both taints and subject to taints'; sometimes they are subject to taints but not taints, sometimes they cannot be said to be 'subject to taints but not taints.' Fifteen faculties cannot be said to be either 'both taints and associated with taints' or 'associated with taints but not taints.' The grief faculty cannot be said to be 'both a taint and associated with taints'; it is associated with taints but not a taint. Six faculties cannot be said to be 'both taints and associated with taints'; sometimes they are associated with taints but not taints, sometimes they cannot be said to be 'associated with taints but not taints.' Nine faculties are dissociated from taints yet subject to taints; three faculties are dissociated from taints and free from taints; the grief faculty cannot be said to be either 'dissociated from taints yet subject to taints' or 'dissociated from taints and free from taints'; three faculties sometimes are dissociated from taints yet subject to taints, sometimes are dissociated from taints and free from taints; six faculties sometimes are dissociated from taints yet subject to taints, sometimes are dissociated from taints and free from taints, and sometimes cannot be said to be either 'dissociated from taints yet subject to taints' or 'dissociated from taints and free from taints.'
