[156] Therein, what is "not getting what one wishes for—that too is suffering (dukkha)" (yampicchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ)?
For beings subject to birth (jāti) such a wish (icchā) arises: "Oh, that we were not subject to birth! Oh, that birth would not come to us!" But this is not to be attained by wishing. This too is "not getting what one wishes for—that too is suffering."
For beings subject to aging (jarā) … for beings subject to illness (byādhi) … for beings subject to death (maraṇa) … for beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair (soka-parideva-dukkha-domanass-upāyāsa) such a wish arises: "Oh, that we were not subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair! Oh, that sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair would not come to us!" But this is not to be attained by wishing. This too is "not getting what one wishes for—that too is suffering."
