[218] Therein, what is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering (dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā)? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttara-jhāna) — emancipating (niyyānika), leading to dispersal (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa). This is called the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. …
