[27] Therein, which is past consciousness (viññāṇa)?
Whatever consciousness is past, ceased, departed, changed, come to an end, utterly come to an end, which having arisen has departed — past, classed as belonging to the past — namely, eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa), ear-consciousness (sotaviññāṇa), nose-consciousness (ghānaviññāṇa), tongue-consciousness (jivhāviññāṇa), body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa), mind-consciousness (manoviññāṇa): this is called past consciousness.
Therein, which is future consciousness?
Whatever consciousness is not born, not become, not come to birth, not produced, not fully produced, not manifest, not arisen, not fully arisen, not risen up, not fully risen up — future, classed as belonging to the future — namely, eye-consciousness … mind-consciousness: this is called future consciousness.
Therein, which is present consciousness?
Whatever consciousness is born, become, come to birth, produced, fully produced, manifest, arisen, fully arisen, risen up, fully risen up — present, classed as belonging to the present — namely, eye-consciousness … mind-consciousness: this is called present consciousness.
