[272] Therein, what is despair (upāyāsa)?
For one touched by loss of relatives (ñātibyasana), or for one touched by loss of wealth (bhogabyasana), or for one touched by loss through illness (rogabyasana), or for one touched by loss of virtue (sīlabyasana), or for one touched by loss of view (diṭṭhibyasana); for one possessed of one or another loss, for one touched by one or another painful phenomenon (dukkhadhamma) — the distress (āyāsa), the despair, the state of being distressed, the state of being in despair: this is called despair.
