[153] Therein, what is despair (upāyāsa)? For one affected by loss of relatives, or for one affected by loss of wealth, or for one affected by loss through illness, or for one affected by loss of virtue (sīla), or for one affected by loss of view (diṭṭhi); for one possessed of one or another loss, for one affected by one or another painful phenomenon (dukkhadhamma) — the distress, the despair, the state of being distressed, the state of being in despair: this is called despair.
