[281] With ignorance (avijjā) as condition (paccaya) there is a volitional formation (saṅkhāra) rooted in ignorance; with the volitional formation as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa) rooted in the volitional formation; with consciousness as condition, name-and-form (nāmarūpa) rooted in consciousness; with name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) rooted in name-and-form; with the six sense bases as condition, contact (phassa) rooted in the six sense bases; with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā) rooted in contact; with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā) rooted in feeling; with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) rooted in craving; with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarāmaraṇa). Thus there is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
