[313] On that occasion, with ignorance (avijjā) as condition there is a volitional formation (saṅkhāra) rooted in ignorance; with the volitional formation as condition there is consciousness (viññāṇa) rooted in the volitional formation; with consciousness as condition there is name (nāma) rooted in consciousness; with name as condition there is contact (phassa) rooted in name; with contact as condition there is feeling (vedanā) rooted in contact; with feeling as condition there is craving (taṇhā) rooted in feeling; with craving as condition there is clinging (upādāna) rooted in craving; with clinging as condition there is existence (bhava); with existence as condition there is birth (jāti); with birth as condition there is aging and death (jarāmaraṇa). Such is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkhakkhandha).
