[314] Therein, what is ignorance (avijjā)? That which is lack of knowledge (aññāṇa), lack of vision, … the bolt of ignorance (avijjālaṅgī), delusion (moha), the unwholesome root (akusalamūla) — this is called ignorance.
Therein, what is "with ignorance as condition, a volitional formation (saṅkhāra) having ignorance as its cause"? That which is volition (cetanā), the act of willing, the state of having willed — this is called "with ignorance as condition, a volitional formation having ignorance as its cause."
Therein, what is "with volitional formation as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa) having volitional formation as its cause"? That which is mind (citta), mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (tajjā manoviññāṇadhātu) — this is called "with volitional formation as condition, consciousness having volitional formation as its cause."
Therein, what is "with consciousness as condition, name (nāma) having consciousness as its cause"? The aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha), the aggregate of perception (saññākkhandha), the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) — this is called "with consciousness as condition, name having consciousness as its cause."
As to "with name as condition, contact (phassa) having name as its cause": therein, what is name? Excluding contact — the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations, the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha): this is called name.
Therein, what is "with name as condition, contact having name as its cause"? That which is contact, touching, coming into contact, the state of having come into contact — this is called "with name as condition, contact having name as its cause." …
Therefore it is said: "Thus is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkhakkhandha)."
