[342] Therein, what is ignorance (avijjā)? That which is absence of knowledge, absence of vision, … the bolt of ignorance (avijjā-laṅgī), delusion (moha), the unwholesome root (akusala-mūla) — this is called ignorance. Therein, what is the volitional formation (saṅkhāra) with ignorance as condition (paccaya)? That which is volition (cetanā), intending (sañcetanā), the state of having intended (sañcetayitatta) — this is called the volitional formation with ignorance as condition. Therein, what is ignorance with the volitional formation also as condition? That which is absence of knowledge, absence of vision, … the bolt of ignorance, delusion, the unwholesome root — this is called ignorance with the volitional formation also as condition. Therein, what is consciousness (viññāṇa) with the volitional formation as condition? That which is mind (citta), mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇa-dhātu) — this is called consciousness with the volitional formation as condition. Therein, what is the volitional formation with consciousness also as condition? That which is volition, intending, the state of having intended — this is called the volitional formation with consciousness also as condition. Therein, what is name (nāma) with consciousness as condition? The aggregate of feeling (vedanā-khandha), the aggregate of perception (saññā-khandha), the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhāra-khandha) — this is called name with consciousness as condition. Therein, what is consciousness with name also as condition? That which is mind, mentality, mentation, … the corresponding mind-consciousness element — this is called consciousness with name also as condition. As to "with name as condition, contact (phassa)": therein, what is name? Excluding contact — the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations, the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇa-khandha): this is called name. Therein, what is contact with name as condition? That which is contact, touching (phusanā), coming into contact (samphusanā), the state of having come into contact (samphusitatta) — this is called contact with name as condition. Therein, what is name with contact also as condition? The aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations, the aggregate of consciousness — this is called name with contact also as condition. … Therefore it is said: "Thus there is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
