[316] Therein, what is ignorance (avijjā)? That which is unknowing, unseeing, … the bolt of ignorance, delusion (moha), the unwholesome root — this is called ignorance. Therein, what is the formation (saṅkhāra) with ignorance as condition (avijjāpaccayā), having ignorance as its cause (avijjāhetuka)? That which is volition (cetanā), intention (sañcetanā), the state of intending (sañcetayitatta) — this is called the formation with ignorance as condition, having ignorance as its cause. Therein, what is the consciousness (viññāṇa) with formation as condition, having formation as its cause? That which is mind (citta), mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu) — this is called the consciousness with formation as condition, having formation as its cause. Therein, what is the name-and-form (nāmarūpa) with consciousness as condition, having consciousness as its cause? There is name, there is form. Therein, what is name? The aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha), the aggregate of perception (saññākkhandha), the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) — this is called name. Therein, what is form (rūpa)? The growth (upacaya) of the eye sense base (cakkhāyatana), … the growth of the body sense base; or whatever other form there is, born of mind, having mind as its cause, having mind as its origination — this is called form. Thus, this name and this form: this is called the name-and-form with consciousness as condition, having consciousness as its cause. "With name-and-form as condition, the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana), having name-and-form as its cause": there is name, there is form. Therein, what is name? The aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations — this is called name. Therein, what is form? The form in dependence on which the mind-consciousness element occurs — this is called form. Thus, this name and this form: this is called name-and-form. Therein, what is the sixth sense base with name-and-form as condition, having name-and-form as its cause? That which is mind, mentality, mentation, … the corresponding mind-consciousness element — this is called the sixth sense base with name-and-form as condition, having name-and-form as its cause. Therein, what is the contact (phassa) with the sixth sense base as condition, having the sixth sense base as its cause? That which is contact, touching (phusanā), coming into contact (samphusanā), the state of having come into contact (samphusitatta) — this is called the contact with the sixth sense base as condition, having the sixth sense base as its cause. … Therefore it is said: "Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
