[326] Therein, what is ignorance (avijjā)? That which is unknowing, non-seeing, … the bar of ignorance (avijjālaṅgī), delusion (moha), the unwholesome root (akusalamūla) — this is called ignorance. Therein, what is the volitional formation (saṅkhāra), associated with ignorance, that arises with ignorance as condition (avijjāpaccayā)? That which is volition (cetanā), intending, the state of intending — this is called the volitional formation, associated with ignorance, that arises with ignorance as condition. Therein, what is the consciousness (viññāṇa), associated with the volitional formation, that arises with the volitional formation as condition? That which is mind (citta), mentality, mentation, … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇa-dhātu) — this is called the consciousness, associated with the volitional formation, that arises with the volitional formation as condition. Therein, what is the name-and-form (nāmarūpa) that arises with consciousness as condition — the name being associated with consciousness? There is name; there is form. Therein, what is name? The aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha), the aggregate of perception (saññākkhandha), the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) — this is called name. Therein, what is form (rūpa)? The growth (upacaya) of the eye base (cakkhāyatana), … the growth of the body base (kāyāyatana); or whatever other form there is that is born of mind, has mind as its cause, is originated by mind — this is called form. Thus, this name and this form: this is called the name-and-form that arises with consciousness as condition — the name being associated with consciousness. "With name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases (saḷāyatana), associated with name": there is name; there is form. Therein, what is name? The aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations — this is called name. Therein, what is form? The four great elements (mahābhūtā), and the form in dependence on which the mind-consciousness element occurs — this is called form. Thus, this name and this form: this is called name-and-form. Therein, what are the six sense bases, associated with name, that arise with name-and-form as condition? The eye base, … the mind base (manāyatana) — this is called the six sense bases, associated with name, that arise with name-and-form as condition. Therein, what is the contact (phassa), associated with the six sense bases, that arises with the six sense bases as condition? That which is contact, contacting, the act of contacting, the state of contacting — this is called the contact, associated with the six sense bases, that arises with the six sense bases as condition. … Therefore it is said: "Thus there is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkhakkhandha)." The Associated Tetrad (Sampayutta-catukka).
