[325] On that occasion, with ignorance (avijjā) as condition, a volitional formation (saṅkhāra) associated with ignorance; with the volitional formation as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa) associated with the volitional formation; with consciousness as condition, mentality-and-materiality (nāmarūpa), the mentality (nāma) being associated with consciousness; with mentality-and-materiality as condition, the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) associated with mentality; with the six sense bases as condition, contact (phassa) associated with the six sense bases; with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā) associated with contact; with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā) associated with feeling; with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) associated with craving; with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa). Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
