[284] With ignorance (avijjā) as condition, a volitional formation (saṅkhāra) associated with ignorance; with the volitional formation as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa) associated with the volitional formation; with consciousness as condition, name-and-form (nāmarūpa) — the name (nāma) being associated with consciousness; with name-and-form as condition, the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana) associated with name; with the sixth sense base as condition, contact (phassa) associated with the sixth sense base; with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā) associated with contact; with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā) associated with feeling; with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) associated with craving; with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarāmaraṇa). Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
