[375] On that occasion, with volitional formation (saṅkhāra) as condition there is consciousness (viññāṇa) associated with volitional formation; with consciousness as condition there is mentality (nāma) associated with consciousness; with mentality as condition there is the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana) associated with mentality; with the sixth sense base as condition there is contact (phassa) associated with the sixth sense base; with contact as condition there is feeling (vedanā) associated with contact; with feeling as condition there is existence (bhava); with existence as condition there is birth (jāti); with birth as condition there is aging and death (jarāmaraṇa). Such is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkhakkhandha).
