[308] Therein, what is ignorance (avijjā)? That which is lack of knowledge, non-seeing, … the bar of ignorance, delusion, the unwholesome root — this is called ignorance.
Therein, what is the volitional formation (saṅkhāra) with ignorance as condition? That which is volition (cetanā), intending, the state of intending — this is called the volitional formation with ignorance as condition.
Therein, what is consciousness (viññāṇa) with volitional formation as condition? That which is mind (citta), mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu) — this is called consciousness with volitional formation as condition.
Therein, what is name-and-form (nāmarūpa) with consciousness as condition? There is name, there is form. Therein, what is name? The feeling aggregate (vedanākkhandha), the perception aggregate (saññākkhandha), the volitional-formations aggregate (saṅkhārakkhandha) — this is called name. Therein, what is form (rūpa)? The growth (upacaya) of the eye sense base (cakkhāyatana), the growth of the ear sense base (sotāyatana), the growth of the nose sense base (ghānāyatana), the growth of the tongue sense base (jivhāyatana), the growth of the body sense base (kāyāyatana); or whatever other form there is that is born of mind (cittaja), has mind as its cause (cittahetuka), is originated by mind (cittasamuṭṭhāna) — this is called form. Thus, this name and this form — this is called name-and-form with consciousness as condition.
As to "with name-and-form as condition, the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana)": there is name, there is form. Therein, what is name? The feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the volitional-formations aggregate — this is called name. Therein, what is form? That form in dependence on which the mind-consciousness element occurs — this is called form. Thus, this name and this form — this is called name-and-form.
Therein, what is the sixth sense base with name-and-form as condition? That which is mind, mentality, mentation, … the corresponding mind-consciousness element — this is called the sixth sense base with name-and-form as condition.
Therein, what is contact (phassa) with the sixth sense base as condition? That which is contact, contacting, the act of contacting, the state of being contacted — this is called contact with the sixth sense base as condition. …
Therefore it is said: "Thus there is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
