[401] Therein, what is the volitional formation (saṅkhāra) with ignorance (avijjā) as condition? That which is volition (cetanā), intending, the state of intending — this is called the volitional formation with ignorance as condition. … Therein, what is the feeling (vedanā) with contact (phassa) as condition? That which is mental ease (sāta), mental pleasure (sukha); the felt ease and pleasure born of mind-contact; the easeful, pleasant feeling born of mind-contact — this is called the feeling with contact as condition. Therein, what is the confidence (pasāda) with feeling as condition? That which is faith (saddhā), trusting, conviction, deep confidence — this is called the confidence with feeling as condition. Therein, what is the resolution (adhimokkha) with confidence as condition? That which is resolution of the mind (citta), resolving, the state of being resolved upon that — this is called the resolution with confidence as condition. Therein, what is the existence (bhava) with resolution as condition? Excluding resolution: the aggregate (khandha) of feeling, the aggregate of perception (saññā), the aggregate of volitional formations, the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇa) — this is called the existence with resolution as condition. … Therefore it is said: "Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
