[312] Therein, what is ignorance (avijjā)? That which is lack of knowledge (ñāṇa), lack of vision, … the bar of ignorance, delusion, the unwholesome root (akusala-mūla) — this is called ignorance. Therein, what is the volitional formation (saṅkhāra) with ignorance as condition, having ignorance as its cause? That which is volition (cetanā), intention, the state of intending — this is called the volitional formation with ignorance as condition, having ignorance as its cause. Therein, what is consciousness (viññāṇa) with the volitional formation as condition, having the volitional formation as its cause? That which is mind (citta), mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇa-dhātu) — this is called consciousness with the volitional formation as condition, having the volitional formation as its cause. Therein, what is name (nāma) with consciousness as condition, having consciousness as its cause? The aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha), the aggregate of perception (saññākkhandha), the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) — this is called name with consciousness as condition, having consciousness as its cause. Therein, what is the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana) with name as condition, having name as its cause? That which is mind, mentality, mentation, … the corresponding mind-consciousness element — this is called the sixth sense base with name as condition, having name as its cause. Therein, what is contact (phassa) with the sixth sense base as condition, having the sixth sense base as its cause? That which is contact, touching, contacting, the state of being in contact — this is called contact with the sixth sense base as condition, having the sixth sense base as its cause. Therein, what is feeling (vedanā) with contact as condition, having contact as its cause? That which is mental ease, mental pleasure; the easeful, pleasant experience born of mind-contact; the easeful, pleasant feeling born of mind-contact — this is called feeling with contact as condition, having contact as its cause. Therein, what is craving (taṇhā) with feeling as condition, having feeling as its cause? That which is lust, infatuation, … infatuation of the mind — this is called craving with feeling as condition, having feeling as its cause. Therein, what is clinging (upādāna) with craving as condition, having craving as its cause? That which is view (diṭṭhi), resorting to views, the thicket of views, the wilderness of views, the contortion of views, the vacillation of views, the fetter of views (diṭṭhisaññojana), grasping, firm grasping, adherence, misapprehension, a bad road, a wrong path, wrongness, the ground of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana), inverted grasping — this is called clinging with craving as condition, having craving as its cause. … Therefore it is said: "Thus there is the origin (samudaya) of this entire mass of suffering (dukkha)."
