[373] Therein, what is the volitional formation (saṅkhāra)? That which is volition (cetanā), intending, the state of having intended — this is called the volitional formation. Therein, what is consciousness (viññāṇa) with volitional formation as condition? That which is mind (citta), intellect (mano), mentation (mānasa) … the corresponding eye-consciousness element (cakkhuviññāṇadhātu) — this is called consciousness with volitional formation as condition. Therein, what is name (nāma) with consciousness as condition? The aggregate of feeling (vedanākkhandha), the aggregate of perception (saññākkhandha), the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) — this is called name with consciousness as condition. Therein, what is the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana) with name as condition? That which is mind, intellect, mentation … the corresponding eye-consciousness element — this is called the sixth sense base with name as condition. Therein, what is contact (phassa) with the sixth sense base as condition? That which is contact, contacting, the act of contacting, the state of having contacted — this is called contact with the sixth sense base as condition. Therein, what is feeling with contact as condition? That which is mental (cetasika), neither agreeable nor disagreeable, the neither-painful-nor-pleasant experience born of mind-contact (cetosamphassa), the neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling born of mind-contact — this is called feeling with contact as condition. Therein, what is existence (bhava) with feeling as condition? Excluding feeling: the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations, the aggregate of consciousness — this is called existence with feeling as condition. … Therefore it is said: "Thus there is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
