[431] The four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna): Here a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body internally; he dwells contemplating the body in the body externally; he dwells contemplating the body in the body both internally and externally — ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. He dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings internally; he dwells contemplating feelings in feelings externally; he dwells contemplating feelings in feelings both internally and externally — ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. He dwells contemplating the mind (citta) in the mind internally; he dwells contemplating the mind in the mind externally; he dwells contemplating the mind in the mind both internally and externally — ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. He dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas internally; he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas externally; he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas both internally and externally — ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world.
