[632] "He purifies the mind (citta) from ill will and malice (byāpāda-padosa)": there is ill will (byāpāda); there is malice (padosa).
Herein, what is ill will? That which is resentment (āghāta) of mind, repugnance (paṭighāta), repulsion (paṭigha), hostility (paṭivirodha), irritation (kopa), indignation (pakopa), exasperation (sampakopa), hatred (dosa), malice (padosa), utter malice (sampadosa), malevolence of mind (cittassa byāpatti), mental malice (manopadosa), anger (kodha), the act of becoming angry (kujjhanā), the state of being angry (kujjhitatta), hatred, the act of hating (dūsanā), the state of being hateful (dūsitatta), malevolence (byāpatti), the act of becoming malevolent (byāpajjanā), the state of being malevolent (byāpajjitatta), opposition (virodha), hostility, ferocity (caṇḍikka), abruptness (asuropa), displeasure (anattamanatā) of mind — this is called ill will.
Herein, what is malice? That which is ill will, that is malice; that which is malice, that is ill will.
Herein, what is the mind? That which is mind, mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa) … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (tajjā manoviññāṇa-dhātu) — this is called the mind.
He cleanses (sodheti), thoroughly cleanses (visodheti), purifies (parisodheti), frees (moceti), liberates (vimoceti), and fully liberates (parimoceti) this mind from this ill will and malice. Therefore it is said: "he purifies the mind from ill will and malice."
