[642] "He purifies the mind (citta) from restlessness and remorse (uddhacca-kukkucca)": there is restlessness (uddhacca); there is remorse (kukkucca).
Therein, what is restlessness? That which is restlessness of the mind, disquietude, mental distraction, turmoil of the mind — this is called restlessness.
Therein, what is remorse? The perception of what is unallowable as allowable … mental scruple — this is called remorse.
Therein, what is mind? That which is mind, mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa) … the corresponding mind-consciousness element (tajjā manoviññāṇadhātu) — this is called mind.
This mind he cleanses, purifies, fully purifies, frees, releases, and fully releases from this restlessness and remorse. Therefore it is said: "he purifies the mind from restlessness and remorse."
