On the occasion when a wholesome (kusala) mind (citta) belonging to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara) has arisen — accompanied by joy (somanassa), associated with knowledge (ñāṇasampayutta); inferior (hīna), medium (majjhima), superior (paṇīta); having zeal as dominant (chandādhipateyya), having energy as dominant (viriyādhipateyya), having mind as dominant (cittādhipateyya), having investigation as dominant (vīmaṃsādhipateyya); having zeal as dominant: inferior, medium, superior; having energy as dominant: inferior, medium, superior; having mind as dominant: inferior, medium, superior; having investigation as dominant: inferior, medium, superior — for one abstaining from the destruction of life, that which on that occasion is the desisting (ārati) from the destruction of life, the refraining (virati), the abstaining (paṭivirati), the abstinence (veramaṇī); the non-performance (akiriyā), the non-doing (akaraṇa), the non-commission (anajjhāpatti), the non-transgression of the boundary (velā-anatikkama), the destruction of the bridge (setughāta) — this is called the training precept of abstinence from the destruction of life.
