[773] Which phenomena (dhammā) are the training (sikkhā)?
On the occasion when a wholesome mind (citta) belonging to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara) has arisen — accompanied by joy (somanassa), associated with knowledge (ñāṇa), having a form (rūpa) as its object (ārammaṇa) … or a dhamma as its object, or with reference to whatever [object] — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa): these phenomena are the training.

On the occasion when a wholesome mind belonging to the sense sphere has arisen — accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, with prompting (sasaṅkhārena) … accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge … accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting … accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā), associated with knowledge … accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge, with prompting … accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge … accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting — having a form as its object … or a dhamma as its object, or with reference to whatever [object] — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction: these phenomena are the training.
Which phenomena are the training?
On the occasion when one develops the path (magga) for rebirth (upapatti) in the form [sphere] … develops the path for rebirth in the formless [sphere] … develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out [of the round], going to dispersal — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), [and,] quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction: these phenomena are the training.
