[788] There are four discriminations (paṭisambhidā): the discrimination of meaning (attha-paṭisambhidā), the discrimination of dhammas (dhamma-paṭisambhidā), the discrimination of language (nirutti-paṭisambhidā), and the discrimination of ready wit (paṭibhāṇa-paṭisambhidā).
Three discriminations arise in the four arisings of mind (cittuppāda) associated with knowledge (ñāṇa) among the sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) wholesome [states], and in the four arisings of mind associated with knowledge among the functional (kiriya) [states]. The discrimination of meaning arises in these same [states], and it arises also in the four paths and in the four fruitions (phala).
