[792] [The four discriminations (paṭisambhidā) are] not taints (āsava). Three discriminations are subject to taints (sāsava); the discrimination of meaning (atthapaṭisambhidā) may be subject to taints, may be not subject to taints (anāsava). [The four discriminations are] dissociated from taints (āsavavippayutta). Three discriminations should not be said to be "both taints and subject to taints"; [they are] subject to taints but not taints. The discrimination of meaning should not be said to be "both a taint and subject to taints"; it may be subject to taints but not a taint; it may be that it should not be said to be "subject to taints but not a taint." [The four discriminations] should not be said to be either "both taints and associated with taints (āsavasampayutta)" or "associated with taints but not taints." Three discriminations are dissociated from taints but subject to taints; the discrimination of meaning may be dissociated from taints but subject to taints, may be dissociated from taints and not subject to taints.
