[828] Therein, which is wisdom partaking of decline (hānabhāginī paññā)?
Perceptions (saññā) and attentions (manasikāra) accompanied by sensuality (kāma) occur to one who has attained the first jhāna — this is wisdom partaking of decline. Mindfulness (sati) in conformity with that (tadanudhammatā) remains steady — this is wisdom partaking of stability (ṭhitibhāginī paññā). Perceptions and attentions accompanied by absence of thought (avitakka) occur — this is wisdom partaking of distinction (visesabhāginī paññā). Perceptions and attentions accompanied by disenchantment (nibbidā), connected with dispassion (virāga), occur — this is wisdom partaking of penetration (nibbedhabhāginī paññā).
Perceptions and attentions accompanied by thought (vitakka) occur to one who has attained the second jhāna — this is wisdom partaking of decline. Mindfulness in conformity with that remains steady — this is wisdom partaking of stability. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā) occur — this is wisdom partaking of distinction. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by disenchantment, connected with dispassion, occur — this is wisdom partaking of penetration.
Perceptions and attentions accompanied by rapture (pīti) occur to one who has attained the third jhāna — this is wisdom partaking of decline. Mindfulness in conformity with that remains steady — this is wisdom partaking of stability. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by neither-pain-nor-pleasure (adukkhamasukha) occur — this is wisdom partaking of distinction. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by disenchantment, connected with dispassion, occur — this is wisdom partaking of penetration.
Perceptions and attentions accompanied by pleasure (sukha) occur to one who has attained the fourth jhāna — this is wisdom partaking of decline. Mindfulness in conformity with that remains steady — this is wisdom partaking of stability. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by the sphere of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana) occur — this is wisdom partaking of distinction. Perceptions and attentions accompanied by disenchantment, connected with dispassion, occur — this is wisdom partaking of penetration.
