[880] Therein, what is hinting (nemittikatā)? On the part of one who relies on gain, honor, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka), who has evil desires (pāpicchā), who is overcome by desire (icchāpakata): whatever sign (nimitta) [given] to others, making of a sign, indication (obhāsa), making of an indication, insinuating talk (sāmantajappā), or roundabout talk (parikathā) — this is called hinting.
