[883] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) "I am better"?
Here a certain person gives rise to conceit on account of birth, or of clan, or of good-family standing, or of beauty of complexion, or of wealth, or of study, or of sphere of work, or of sphere of craft, or of branch of knowledge, or of learning, or of intelligence, or on one or another ground. That which is of such a kind: conceit, conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, (flaunting like) a banner, self-exaltation, the desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called the conceit "I am better."
