[884] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) "I am equal"?
Here someone gives rise to conceit by birth, or by clan, or by being of a good family, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by sphere of work, or by sphere of craft, or by branch of knowledge, or by learning, or by ready wit, or by one or another ground. That which, of such a kind, is conceit, conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, the banner, flaunting, the desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called the conceit "I am equal."
