[887] Therein, which is the conceit (māna) "I am equal" on the part of one who is superior?
Here someone is superior — by birth (jāti), or by clan, or by being of good family, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study, or by sphere of work, or by sphere of craft, or by branch of knowledge, or by learning, or by intelligence (paṭibhāṇa). On one or another ground he regards himself as equal to others. In dependence on that he conceives conceit. Whatever of such a kind is conceit, conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, a banner, self-exaltation, the mind's (citta) desire for a banner — this is called the conceit "I am equal" on the part of one who is superior.
