[888] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) 'I am inferior' of one who is superior?
Here someone is superior — by birth, or by clan, or by good family, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by study (ajjhena), or by sphere of work (kammāyatana), or by sphere of craft (sippāyatana), or by branch of knowledge (vijjāṭṭhāna), or by learning, or by ready wit (paṭibhāṇa), or on one or another ground. He regards himself as inferior to others; depending on that, he engenders self-abasement (omāna). That which is of such a kind — self-abasement, the deeming of oneself as low, the state of having deemed oneself low, scorning, utter scorning, the state of utter scorn, contempt for oneself, disdain for oneself, belittling of oneself — this is called the conceit 'I am inferior' of one who is superior.
