[889] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) "I am better" on the part of one who is equal? Here someone is equal by birth, or by clan, or by being of good family, … by some ground or other he ranks himself as better than others. Depending on that, he gives rise to conceit. Any such conceit, conceiving, state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, flaunting a banner, hoisting oneself up, desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called the conceit "I am better" on the part of one who is equal.
