[890] Therein, what is the conceit (māna) "I am equal" on the part of one who is equal?
Here someone is equal — by birth (jāti), or by clan, or by standing as one of good family, … By one basis or another he regards himself as equal to others. In dependence on that, he engenders conceit. Whatever of such a kind is conceit, conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, flaunting a flag, hoisting oneself up, the mind's (citta) desire for a banner — this is called the conceit "I am equal" on the part of one who is equal.
