[897] Therein, what is conceit and excessive conceit (mānātimāna)?
Here someone, by birth, or by clan, or by being of good family, … or by one or another basis, at an earlier time regards himself as equal to others, and at a later time regards himself as superior; he does not regard himself as inferior to others. Whatever conceit of such a kind there is — conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, (flaunting oneself like) a flag, self-exaltation, the desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called conceit and excessive conceit.
