[896] Therein, what is contempt (atimāna)? Here someone despises others on account of birth, or on account of clan, or on account of good-family status, … or on account of one or another ground. Any conceit (māna) of such a kind — conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, a banner, self-exaltation, the mind's (citta) desire for a banner — this is called contempt.
